Discerning God's Call

Discerning God's call and hearing His voice can be very difficult sometimes (let's be honest, a lot of the time) but there are a few ways that God communicates with us to help us discern where He wants us to serve Him.

The way God speaks to us the most is through His Word (the Bible). It is the primary way he has chosen to teach us about himself. When the Bible says things like "go and make disciples of all nations" it is talking directly to every single one of us. God has been so good to us to give us the Bible so that we have "a lamp to my feet and a light for my path - Psalm 119:105."

God also speaks to us and directs us to where he wants us through passions. Mother Teresa said "God gives no desires that are meant to go unfulfilled" (it is hard sometimes to figure out what are God given desires and what are not). When you are passionate about something check to see if it is inline with what is in the Bible. Are you passionate about Camp ministry? Or is there another passion that God has given you to follow (overseas missions, inner-city missions, writing, cooking, administration, etc). Someone else said (I can't remember who, and I couldn't even find it on Google) "Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength then do as you will" meaning if we are so totally consumed by our love for God, like he wishes for us, then what we want will always be inline with what God wants. This same idea can be seen in Psalm 34:4 where it says "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart."

God can also speak to us through other people. We have to be careful with this one because sometimes it is not God speaking through that person. Again check to make sure it agrees with what the Bible says or ask a few different mature Christians who you trust and see if they agree.

Another way that God often speaks to us is through circumstances. Do circumstances seem to be pointing you toward being able to work at Camp this summer or do you have a lot of other commitments already in place that will make it hard to focus and commit fully to Camp while still trying to stay true to other commitments. Sometimes obstacles are meant to be overcome and other times they are there to direct us. I once asked someone how many obstacles I am suppose to overcome until I take it as a sign to stop. That person told me to never stop overcoming the obstacles and if God didn't want me to do what I was trying to do he would just say no. In other words the obstacles would stop and and God would simply make it impossible.

Some people describe a peace in their hearts when they know they are following God's will. The Bible says "seek peace and purse it" (1 Peter 3:11).  Although we might still be scared and confused there is a deep inner peace (Shalom) that transcends out outer circumstances.
